It was a common oral and topical antibiotic until less toxic alternatives were discovered. It is no longer used in humans. Sulfathiazole is added to the diet of laboratory animals to inhibit folate formation by gut bacteria. This ensures that the animal′s only source of available folate is from their diet. Sulfathiazole is a sulfonamide antibiotic that blocks the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by inhibiting the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase. Sulfathiazole is a competitive inhibitor of bacterial para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), which is required for bacterial synthesis of folic acid. It is active against Gram positive bacteria, Gram negative bacteria and Chlamydia. Mode of resistance is via the alteration of dihydropteroate synthase or alternative pathway for folic acid synthesis.

体内研究：

Sulfathiazole (50 mg/L、500 mg/L；水体暴露；每日喂食；14 d) sodium 在雄性日本青鳉鱼 (Oryzias latipes) 模型中可显著提高血浆中 17-雌二醇 (E2) 浓度。
Sulfathiazole (1%；混入纯化饲料；每日摄入) sodium 在断奶期及断奶后不久的 Wistar 和 Osborne-Mendel 品系白化大鼠模型中导致骨髓中多形核中性粒细胞、杆状核细胞和晚幼粒细胞减少，骨骼肌坏死和钙化，肺/冠状动脉/肾动脉钙化或玻璃样变，肝细胞水样变性和局灶性透明坏死，肾上腺皮质细胞透明坏死，甲状腺增生，以及皮下组织、体腔和器官出血。
